Rite of Passage is an autobiographical installation made by Kellen Stanley. The exhibition reflects on a new era shifting in her family as Kellen’s mom reaches retirement. The work honors the relationship built between a mother and daughter with an overall awareness of mortality.

Rite of Passage culminates from Western Drive, a series made with writing, performance, and handmade perfume to revere the artist’s childhood lake house. When Western Drive was created in 2015, Kellen was unaware she was making a body of work about interactions with her grandparents in a rural landscape where her parents are now retiring. Four years later, with her parents the new elders in the family, Rite of Passage speaks of loss, identity, and necessary repair.

Performance to activate the installation begins on Thursday, June 6 at 8 PM.
