Lesta Frank Contemporary Art Opening

January 16, 2025, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Molly Shafer Gallery, KWA Office 122 Madison

Lesta Frank is a local Southtown artist. Her work includes art journaling, watercolor and mixed media. Her love for painting started with finger painting when she was two. The artist’s current work is mixed media, contemporary, intuitive, abstract painting, and figurative abstracts. Lesta received and a Bachelor of Fine Art from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a Master of Fine Art from Rochester Institute of Technology. The exhibit will be on view Monday-Thursday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. through March 6, 2025.

Los Nahuatlatos – Xicano Fusion 

March 23, 2025,  5:30 – 6:30 p.m. 

The name, Los Nahuatlatos, derives from the body of language spoken by the various tribes of the Aztecas. It loosely means “the translators” or “interpreters.” They are a group of musicians with deep roots to their Xicano-Indigenous heritage whose mission is to create original, inspiring and innovative music on a conscious level that people of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy. Self-described as “Xicano Roots Fusion,” their music is a synthesis of traditional Latino styles. From Conjunto to Reggae, Chicano Soul to Cumbia and Ska, Los Nahuatlatos don’t so much straddle the line as find the groove in between worlds (per the band’s website). US AIR FORCE BAND OF THE WEST Woodwind Chamber Ensemble

November 24, 2024, 4-5 p.m.

The Concert in the Park series features the US AIR FORCE BAND OF THE WEST Woodwind Chamber Ensemble at Opportunity Homes Beautify San Antonio Park. 801 S Main Ave. FREE and open to the public of all ages. Come early & bring your family & friends, a blanket or chairs, and a picnic if you like!

Las Rancheritas "The Rug Hook Project"

November 7, 2024, 6-8 p.m.

Join us for our next Art Exhibit featuring Las Rancheritas "The Rug Hook Project" on Thursday, November 7 from 6-8 p.m. at the King William Association, 122 Madison St. A group of rural farming women living near San Miguel de Allende, MX, have been hooking rugs since 1998. Come to the opening and see these unique, beautiful and colorful weavings. Sale of the rugs of different sizes go to help meet the needs of the families. A great opportunity for Holiday Shopping! The exhibit will be up until November 19, 2024.

Feathers and Flora: The Birds of South Texas and Native Plants to Attract Them

bexarbrass

october 20, 2024, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

The King William Association Concert in the Park series continues with BexarBrass performing on Sunday, October 20 from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. at Beautify San Antonio Park, 801 S. Main. BexarBrass is a brass band from San Antonio dedicated to carrying on the traditions of New Orleans jazz while incorporating the sounds of funk, rock, reggae, hip hop, and the traditional sounds of San Antonio. Their members consist of musicians from some of the best bands in San Antonio.

Here is your chance to acquire some artwork and art books from the Harry and Molly Shafer collection. Many items are by San Antonio artists and photographers, and some are works that feature San Antonio. Proceeds benefit the events sponsored by the KW Cultural Arts Committee.

Mariachi Damas de Jalisco

The King William Association Concert in the Park Series continues with a perennial favorite! Mariachi Damas de Jalisco will make their seventh appearance for the KWA at Beautify San Antonio Park, 801 S. Main Ave. San Antonio’s Premier All Female Mariachi Group will share the beauty and
culture of Mexico with the audience in a celebration of Cinco de Mayo!

 

Agarita Chamber Ensemble

April 14, 2024, 4:00- 5:00 p.m.

The Cultural Arts Committee is again presenting the Agarita Chamber players for their fourth appearance for the King William Association. The concert will take place at Opportunity Homes’ Beautify San Antonio Park at 801 S Main St. between Johnson and Sheridan Streets. Agarita’s Mission: “Agarita nourishes the local community through artistic collaborations, education, community engagement, and free, adventurous programming. Founded by four musicians rooted in San Antonio, Agarita is devoted to reaching new audiences by reinventing the concert experience.”


Down for the Count

March 24, 2024, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.

According to their website, Down for the Count began in May of 2010 when Matthew Wise and Gene Dowdy, decided to broaden their sound with a full band. Since then, they added Gary Mabry, Bethany Hirota-Mabry, and Tim Logan to the band. Twelve years later, Down for the Count thrives in their own sound, fusing the Bluegrass and Americana genres and occasionally letting their strings wander over into the Pop and Classic Rock arenas as well. Cultivating Native Plants in King William, Presentation by Pam Peck

March 21, 2024

7:00 pm. to 8:00 p.m.

Learn the ecological benefits of using native plants, how to choose plants that will thrive in your yard, and review over 50 hardy and beautiful native trees, shrubs, perennials, and groundcovers commonly available in local nurseries. Pam Peck has been an avid amateur home gardener for 40 years, the last eleven of which have been in San Antonio. Pam is a life member of the Native Plant Society of Texas. She currently serves as a board member and the volunteer coordinator for the San Antonio Chapter. Most mornings you will now find Pam happily puttering in her garden as she recently retired from federal service where she practiced federal sector employment law.

An Exhibit of Glen Andrews Blown Art Glass

January 11, 2024,

6:30 -8:00 p.m.

Glen Andrews is the heart and soul of Caliente Hot Glass in San Antonio. An exhibit of his latest series inspired by the mythological journey of Daedalus will be on display in the KWA Molly Shafer Gallery. The public is invited to the Opening of the Exhibit that will run through February 29, 2024.

Glenn began his glassblowing practice in the early 2000s, honing his skill at studios that focus on both the art and the production of blown glass. After a decade of working with glass, he joined Caliente Hot Glass studio where he leads as resident artist and creates under his own brand. Working with glass in the “hotship” is akin to entering a sanctuary for him. His artistic process focuses on how the medium wants to be transformed, followed closely by a keen awareness of the way color and light will affect the viewer. Often his pieces gonbeyond the beauty of glass alone and into the elucidation of philosophical and interpersonal concepts, using the grace of glass to tell the story.

Presentation by Retired Federal Law Enforcement Officer of the U.S. Secret Service Shawn Campbell and President of the Board of Directors of the King William Association

San Antonio’s Premier All Female Mariachi Group will give their sixth Concert in the Park appearance at San Antonio Housing Authority’s Beautify San Antonio Park at 801 S Main Ave.

These talented performers drew a big crowd last year as we began to meet again for outdoor events. Come on out and celebrate a belated Cinco de Mayo with family, friends and neighbors.

The Dirty River Jazz Band

Sunday, April 24, 5:30pm-6:30pm

The Dirty River Jazz Band will bring the sound of traditional jazz to SAHA’s Beautify San Antonio Park, 801 S. Main Ave. on April 24. The seven-piece band is led by Chris Alvarado, and has its roots in Seguin, Texas at Texas Lutheran University. The band performed at a concert with Jim Cullum in their early days. You can catch them on Tuesday evenings at the St. Anthony Hotel.  

According to their website, dirtyriverjazzband.com, “With everyone in the band being a music educator, the goal of the band is to bring high energy and expertise to a style of music that some have not forgotten. The roaring 20s are coming back around, and The Dirty River Jazz Band is the future of traditional jazz in Texas.” 

FORT SAM’S OWN 323D ARMY BAND JAZZ COMBO “AFTER 5”

The After 5 combo, the U.S. Army’s Band at Fort Sam Houston, is the premier jazz ensemble of the 323d Army Band and is the most requested ensemble by Joint Base San Antonio’s Senior Leaders. It performs between 30-40 concerts a year at various venues on military installations and for communities all over Texas.

“Fort Sam’s Own” 323d Army Band was formed in January 1944 at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania and moved to Fort Sam Houston, Texas on 11 June 1946. Its mission is to promote the Army and our national interests and set conditions that lead to trust and confidence in America’s Army.

Come and listen to Any Color You Like play their mix of soul, hip hop, and psychedelic folk sounds at the park. The members of the band include founder Noah Slavin, Gilbert Salazar, Monroe Chapman, Ryan Hollander, and Russell Anthony. These San Antonio musicians are diverse in their culture, style, and energy and their goal is to bring joy everywhere they go.

These talented dancers have performed at the King William Fair and many other venues including the Walt Disney Resort in Florida. We appreciate their passion for the art of dance and are delighted to share it with you.
